Dental public health (DPH) training and practice has been evolving over the last several decades. Building on a prior study (OHWRC 2021-2022) that identified core tensions among stakeholders in the field, this project will seek to further engage stakeholders to look for innovative solutions in the field that help to resolve these tensions. For example, dental public health residents are encouraged to take the board exams, but many find the process difficult and do not finish. Some educational programs have incorporated exam preparation and support as part of the curriculum to help overcome this barrier. In addition, there is a shortage of DPH practice opportunities, and with no clear pathway to expanding more traditional jobs, new pathways are needed. This study will be led by Dr. Sepideh Banava and Dr. Enihomo Obadan-Udoh (UCSF). The project will entail qualitative interviews with key stakeholders and education programs, as well as a Delphi process with key stakeholders to identify possible solutions. Findings will be relevant to future investments in dental public health.
